Unselfish Love, Kindness, Harmlessness.
These Things You Can Believe In.
Spirituality can mean many different things for many different people,
but there
is one thing that all good people around the world regardless of where they come
from believe
is True Spirituality: Unselfish Love. Also known by christians as the
Golden Rule, it can be found within the tenets of just about every major world religion. Like a smile, it
is one of those things that transcends cultural boundaries. The Golden Rule was stated
most clearly as a commandment by the being known as
Jesus Christ:
"That ye love one another; as I have loved you,
that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my
discipels, if ye have love one to another."
It cannot really get any more simple
than that, right?? But for those who really take the time to think about what it
means to really apply this rule in their every-day life, at work, at school etc.,
and what it would mean if everyone else in the world were living by that rule, it becomes
obvious that this is perhaps the most important and practical teaching that ever existed!
What else can possibly be of greater importance than Unselfish Love, and it's
offspring 'virtues': Compassion, Kindness and humility?
Spirituality information can at best only lead you to
better understand yourself and the world around you which in turn could help to
make you more Loving.
Love is the means and the end. Spiritual knowledge is frequently a distraction from the essence of what
spirituality really is all about. Most modern-day spirituality is aimed at
GETTING richer, GETTING more wealth, GETTING what YOU
WANT. This is not the true essence of spirituality and can
never lead a person to true inner peace and happiness because these two
things are not based in any way on any form of self-gain. It is the Self
that loses everything, but the Spirit that (re)gains everything.
One can spend a lifetime in search of spiritual
truths and only end up with only more knowledge but no love to give. From "Tell Him",
a song by Lauryn Hill: "Now I may have wisdom and knowledge on Earth. But if
I speak wrong then what is it worth?"
In the end, it all comes back to Love, giving Love and being a vehicle for
the Will of God/the Universal Spirit (Your Inner Being).
Below is a method from the
Lost Teachings of Atlantis to
discern the importance of spiritual
knowledge versus simple goodness in a person's character. It is slightly modified to still make sense out of context.
Think about one person in your life whom you know sufficiently to be able to 'paint
a picture' of their overall character, the good the bad and the ugly traits
included. This one may be a dear friend,
someone you've known for a long time or someone you recently met. Now imagine what the world
would be like if that single person was duplicated 6 billion times and the
entire world was populated, and run by, that person? Bring into mind the good,
and the bad traits in their character of which you are aware..
Some of these 'duplicates' would of course be in power positions and as the old saying
goes: "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". A person with a
great deal of spiritual knowledge, yet who lacks Unselfish Love would
still primarily look after him/her Self and today's horrors like war,
torture and starvation would very likely still exist in that world.
Now consider the person
who lacks spiritual knowledge yet displays a tremendous kindness, consideration and compassion
towards his fellow human beings.
What would
that world be like? It can only be a true paradise on earth - a loving, wonderful,
creative
place where everyone helps each other, takes care of each other and wonderful
things can be achieved that are beneficient to the flow of nature instead of
harmful as it is now. Think of the possibilities of what a team of 6 billion people working
together could achieve!
The analogy above clearly illustrates that it does not matter what a
person knows, but how they conduct themselves. Therefore, all the
spirituality information ever written about spirituality will only be of real
help until it is accompanied by a genuine sense of caring and compassion (aspects
of Unselfish Love) and is acted on
accordingly.
From the movie Meet John Doe (1941): "To most of you, your neighbor is
a stranger, a guy with a barkin' dog and high fence around him. Now, you can't
be a stranger to any guy that's on your own team. So tear down the fence that
separates you. Tear down the fence and you'll tear down a lot of hates and
prejudices. Tear down all the fences in the country and you'll really have
teamwork!"
