Christianity is an Abrahamic religion based on the life,
and teachings, of Jesus of Nazareth as described in the New Testament. Although
Christians believe in one God it is thought, by most Christians, to exist in
three divine persons called the Holy Trinity. The main source of Christianity is
the Holy Bible which encompasses both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
However some Christians place the most emphasis on the teachings of Jesus Christ
that are found in the Gospels.
Christianity encompasses numerous religious traditions that widely vary by
culture and time. However Christianity can be grouped into three main branches:
Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. It is the world's
largest single religion, with over 2.2 billion followers.
The Essence of Jesus Christ's Message
"
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it,
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
- Matthew 22:35
Jesus Christ is believed by many to have lived for 33 years, yet during this
time had a profound impact on world history. Much of what we know about Jesus
Christ is based on the 4 gospels written many years after his death. There are
many gaps in the life of Jesus, but it appears the most significant years of his
life were the last 3 years. During this time he travelled widely spreading his
message and teachings.
